Cards Sweep Rangers in Sunday Doubleheader

The William Jewell College softball team welcomed the Rangers of University of Wisconsin-Parkside for a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday.

Jewell swept the Rangers winning game one 10-2 and taking the nightcap 5-2.  The Cardinals improve to 24-22 overall and 13-11 in the GLVC.  Parkside falls to 15-27 overall and 9-13 in league play.

In game one, Sidney Brashear helped the Cards get on the board first with a two out two-run homerun in the bottom of the first.  It was her first career round tripper and gave Jewell a 2-0 run lead after one inning.

Carley Dundee tied the game up in the top of third with a two-run shot of her own.  It was her 10th homerun of the season for the Rangers.

Madi Giles doubled to drive in Lindsey Glynn to put Jewell back on top 3-2.  Brooke Bernard singled to drive in Giles and Emily Hoover followed up with a two-run shot to put Jewell up 6-2 heading to the fourth.

Jewell added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth on Lynne Greenstreet's fielder's choice and senior Maddi Cox got her first RBI of the year to put Jewell up 8-2 driving in Greenstreet.

Glynn lead off the sixth by reaching second off an error by Parkside's center fielder and Giles followed with a double to drive home Glynn.   The Cardinals then loaded the bases and won the game on the GLVC 8-run rule when Giles scored on a wild pitch.

Hoover, Giles, Bernard and Brashear each had two hits apiece for the Cardinals and were responsible for seven of Jewell's 10 runs.

Anna Biondo earned her 16th win of the season on the mound for the Cards going six innings, giving up six hits and two runs while striking out five.

Hoover got the Cardinals on the board first in game two with a long single that scored Giles from first.  Jewell added a single run in the second before the Rangers tied the game with two in the top of the third.

Two Ranger errors helped Jewell plate home three runs in the bottom of the fifth that produced the winning 5-2 margin.

Giles and Hoover collected two hits each for Jewell and pitcher Sarah Lewis helped her cause with two hits.

Lewis went the distance earning her seventh win of the year.  She struck out four batters and gave up seven hits and two runs.

The Cardinals will close the home portion of their 2017 schedule with a GLVC doubleheader against Lewis University tomorrow (Monday) at 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
