Cards Split Twinbill with Lewis

The William Jewell College Softball team closed out the home portion of their 2017 schedule hosting Lewis University for a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader.

The Flyers edged the Cards 4-3 in game one while Jewell got by Lewis 3-2 in the nightcap. The Cards move to 25-23 overall and 14-12 in the GLVC while the Flyers move to 24-23 overall and 12-14 in league play.

In game one, Jewell jumped on the board first when Sydne Brashear drove home Madi Giles who led off with a double.

Kendyl Strack's two out two-run homerun put the Flyers on top 2-1 in the top of fourth before Kelsey Morgan followed up with a two-run homerun of her own in the bottom of the inning.

The score remained 3-2 until Lewis tied the game in the top of the seventh and took 4-3 lead in the top of the 8th off of two costly Cardinal errors.

Lewis hurler Dara Sanders would go the distance for the Flyers giving up 7 hits, and three runs while striking out 8.

Jewell pitcher Sarah Lewis went 6.1 innings giving up 7 hits and three runs while striking out four.  Anna Biondo (16-7) took the loss in relief.

Brashear led the Cards going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.

Giles got Jewell on the board in the bottom of the first in game two with a lead off solo homerun.

Lewis responded by tying  the game in the top of third with a solo shot before Jewell's Breshaer socked a two-run homerun to center that put the Cards up 3-1.

The Flyers added another solo homer to pull within 3-2 but Biondo closed out game to earn her team leading 17th win of the season striking out three and giving up
only four hits.

The Cardinals will head east next weekend to close out the regular season with doubleheaders against Illinios-Springfield and McKendree on Saturday and Sunday respectively.
