Head softball coach
Dustin Combs made history on Sunday afternoon as he won his 300th career game with a game one win, en route to leading Jewell to a double header sweep of Drury. The Cardinals move to 17-17 overall and 9-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, while Drury falls to 17-21 and 5-11 in league play.
GAME ONE | Cardinals 5 - Drury 1
In the opener, the Cardinals came out firing, scoring two runs in the first inning. The first five batters all reached base against Drury starter Jessica Kjeldgaard, led by
Madelynne Greenstreet scoring on a single from
Brooke Bernard. Bernard then came around to score on a sac fly off the bat of
Sydne Brashear.
The Cards added a single run in the third frame as junior Madi Giles ripped a double to left and scored on a another Cardinal double, this time from
Emily Hoover to give Jewell a 3-0 lead.
Drury got on the board in the following frame on a solo home run from Kelley Conway make it 3-1 before Hoover responded in the fifth inning with a solo shot of her own.
Lindsay Glynn added an RBI single in the sixth to bring the score to the final of 5-1.
The Cardinals out hit Drury 8-5 led by two a piece from Hoover and Giles. Hoover also added two RBI while Glynn swiped two bases.
Anna Biondo (12-4) turned in another strong performance as the sophomore went seven innings, allowing just one earned run on five hits, while striking out three.
GAME TWO | Cardinals 1 - Drury 0
In the night cap it was two freshmen who came up big for the Cardinals as Hoover's 11th home run of the season, and second of the afternoon, was all the scoring either team could muster.
Fortunately for Jewell, another newcomer,
Sarah Lewis (4-5) was on her game in the circle. Lewis earned her fourth win and second shut out of the year after allowing just five hits and striking out two batters. Her counterpart Destiny Bolen was also strong for the Panthers, allowing just four hits but the one mistake was a big one as she fell to 8-10.
Both teams threatened throughout the game but combined to strand 13 runners. Giles, Bernard, Hoover, and Brashear each posted one hit while Greenstreet drew a walk.
