The William Jewell College football team hosted South Dakota School of Mines in the 2017 season opener on Thursday night at Greene Stadium. The Cardinals fell behind early and would fall by a final score of 42-27 despite making a strong comeback effort in the late stages of the contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q (5:06) The Hardrockers scored first with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Jake Sullivan to Ian Anderson and led 7-0 after the extra point.
- 1Q (1:33) Jewell responded on the ensuing drive when quarterback Brad Strauss ran it in from 17 yards, followed by a successful PAT from Dalton Dye to tie the game at seven.
- 2Q (11:27) South Dakota Mines then scored the first of their 21 second quarter points on a 54 yard reception by Brandon LaBrie.
- 2Q (6:28) The Hardrockers pushed the lead to 21-7 when Sullivan ran the ball in from two yards out.
- 2Q (00:22) SDSMT went into the intermission with a 28-7 advantage after a nine yard rush from Dorian Cowart.
- 3Q (7:12) Strauss connected with Bulla Graft who scampered 63 yards on Jewell's first possession of the third quarter. Dye's extra point was no good and Jewell trailed 28-13.
- 3Q (3:13) The Hardrockers answered right back, as Kevin Thompson rushed in from 18 yards out and after the PAT was successful as Mines led 35-13.
- 4Q (11:51) On Jewell's next drive Strauss hit running back Trejuan Mask who took it to the end zone from 44 yards out and cut the lead to 15.
- 4Q (10:12) Jewell had a tough time containing LaBrie who hauled in his second touchdown of the night, a 52 yard reception, to put Mines up 42-20.
- 4Q (6:27) On Jewell's next drive, Strauss hit Keelon Vann from 28 yards out and cut the lead to the final of 42-27.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Mask hauled in five catches for 76 yards and a touchdown
- Strauss dished out 324 yards passing and three touchdowns while also leading the Cards with 108 rushing yards on 15 carries
- Linebacker Quayde Bauman posted six tackles to lead the defense
- Thaddeus Glenn connected on his first career interception after moving to the defensive side of the ball
TURNING POINT
- After the Cardinals put together a solid response to the opening score, the Hardrockers outscored Jewell 21-0 in the second quarter.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- In his two career games against South Dakota Mines, Strauss has collected 691 passing yards, 140 rushing yards, and accounted for a combined seven touchdowns
