Cardinals Sweep Ohio Dominican, Split Day One of Middle of Everywhere Classic

The William Jewell volleyball team split the opening day of the Middle of Everywhere Classic, hosted by Missouri S&T, as they swept Ohio Dominican 25-16, 25-23, 25-23, after dropping the opening match to No. 18 Washburn 25-19, 25-22, 25-20. The Cardinals now stand at 2-4 overall. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
    No. 18 Washburn
  • SET ONE: The Cardinals fell behind early before battling back to tie things up at 10. The Ichabods went on a 12-6 run to take a 22-16 lead before taking the set 25-19.
  • SET TWO: For the second consecutive set, Jewell got off to a slow start but battled back to eventually knot things up at 21-21. Two errors and a kill from WU's Kelsey Gordon sealed the set 25-22 for the Ichabods. 
  • SET THREE:Jewell got things moving in the final set going on a 5-0 run to take a 14-12 lead, led by kills from Grace Miller and Maddie Wingert. Washburn countered with a 5-0 run of their own to go back on top 17-14. From there the Cards managed just four kills and fell 25-20.

  • SET ONE:The Cardinals jumped out on top quickly with a 17-8 advantaged on the back of two kills from Stefanie Richterkessing and aided by eight Panther errors. Jewell went on to take the set 25-16. 
  • SET TWO: In set two, the Cards fell behind by as many as five (12-7) before a 10-3 run led to a 17-15 advantage. The Panthers regained the lead at 22-21 but Jewell responded by scoring four of the next five points to take the set 25-23
  • SET THREE: The Cardinals trailed majority of the third set before a final push led to a 25-23 win. Down 19-16, Jewell went on a 8-1 run, aided by four ODU errors before a big kill from Miller led to the 3-0 sweep. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
    Washburn    
  • The freshman Wingert put up a career high 11 kills on a .250 attack percentage.
  • Richterkessing collected a double-double of 11 kills and 13 digs while hitting .290. 
  • Lacey Albers grabed four kills on a team-leading .300 attack percentage 
  • Setter Alix Weigel led the staff with 32 assists and 12 digs 
  • Libero Olivia Tolberd collected another 20 dig game opposite the Ichabods. 
    Ohio Dominican
  • Paige Cunningham topped the Cards with nine kills while Miller posted seven on a .636 attack percentage. 
  • Tolberd added 13 more digs to her total while Kennedy Ruckh also posted double digits with ten. 
  • The setting staff was well balanced against ODU with Weigel, Megan Rhule, and Lauren Castaneda all collecting ten assists and combining for 11 digs. 

UP NEXT
The Cardinals will wrap up the Middle of Everywhere Classic tomorrow with a match up with undefeated Upper Iowa before bracket play in the afternoon.
