The William Jewell women's basketball team rallied from 10 points down in the second half only to see Missouri S&T regain their lead and steal a 64-59 win over the Cardinals in Rolla, Mo. on Monday evening. Jewell falls to 7-7 on the year and 4-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: The Cardinals grabbed a five point lead late in the first quarter after a layup from Kayla Harrell. The Miners scored the final six points of the period to hold a 16-15 advantage after ten minutes of play.
- 2Q: A steal and score by Sydney Offield put Jewell back on top 23-21 but Missouri S&T closed the quarter outscoring the Cardinals 13-7 to send Jewell to the locker room trailing 34-30.
- 3Q: The Miners opened the second half with an 11-5 run to push their lead to 10 until the Cardinals mounted a rally. Jewell scored seven of the final nine points of the period, including a layup from Hayden Butler with one second remaining, to trail by just four, 49-45, heading into the final quarter.
- 4Q: The run continued into the fourth period as back-to-back layups from Adriana Rodriguez tied the game at 49 with 9:20 to play. The two teams went back-and-forth for the next six minutes until Missouri S&T got a jumper from Marta Durk to take a 57-55 lead. The Cardinals pulled within one but could get no closer falling 64-59.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals forced Missouri S&T into 14 turnovers which led to 13 points.
- Jewell outrebounded the Miners 36-34, including pulling down eight offensive boards, which led to nine second chance points.
- The Miners hit 16-of-19 free throws on the night to secure their late lead.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Rodriguez and Katie Finn each posted 16 points to lead the Cardinals. Finn scored 11 of her 16 in the first half while Rodriguez scored all but four in the second half.
- Harrell gave the Cards three players in double figures with 14 points.
- Lindsey McCoy led Jewell with six rebounds
- Rodriguez also grabbed two blocks.
