Cardinals Down Division I UMKC, 86-74

The William Jewell men's basketball team knocked off Division I Missouri-Kansas City 86-74 at Municipal Auditorium on Tuesday night in an exhibition game.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After trailing 12-10, the Cardinals rattled off a 23-0 run and held UMKC scoreless for better than ten minutes to take a commanding 33-12 lead. Keith Hayes started the rally with back-to-back three pointers and hit four total during the run.
  • The Roos outscored Jewell 20-5 over the final 4:42 of the first half and pulled within six, 38-32, at the break.
  • UMKC opened the second half strong, scoring eight of the first ten points and pulling within two on a three from Broderick Robinson. The two teams traded buckets over the next six minutes before a jumper by Easton Koch kick started another Jewell run. The Cardinals outscored the Roos 10-0 over the next two minutes to take a 60-46 lead with 10:24 remaining.
  • The lead grew to as many as 16 with 5:09 to play before UMKC put together a late rally to pull within eight. Jewell hit seven of eight free throw attempts over the final 1:20 to seal the upset.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals shot just 41 percent from the field on the night but made good on 29-of-34 free throw attempts.
  • Jewell outrebounded UMKC 44-39.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Hayes poured in a game high 31 points, including 22 in the first half, to go along with seven rebounds.
  • Byron Harp and Patrick Whelan each added 15 points while Koch chipped in 11.
  • Pharroh Gordon collected a game-high 10 rebounds.

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • Because the win is an exhibition contest, it does not count towards Jewell's overall record or head coach Larry Holley's win total. The head man will look to tie Bob Knight for ninth on the all-time men's college basketball wins list on Thursday.

UP NEXT
Jewell returns to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Thursday night as they travel to McKendree for a 7:30 p.m. tip off.
