Cardinals Fall in Overtime to Black Hills State

The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped the opening game of the Ramada Inn Classic 66-62 to Black Hills State in overtime. The loss drops Jewell to 1-1 on the young season. 
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1stQuarter: The Cardinals came out slowly, falling in an 8-1 whole and forcing an early timeout from Jill Slominski. Jewell responded with a 9-0 run, capped by a three from Antoinette Mussorici to take a 10-8 lead. The two teams traded points the rest of the quarter and the Cards ended the first point trailing 13-14. 
  • 2ndQuarter: Jewell opened the second quarter with a 10-0 run after a traditional three-point play from Natalie Closser to open a 23-14 advantage. The Yellowjackets climbed back into the game with a 13-6 run of their own cut the Jewell lead to 29-27 at the break. 
  • 3rdQuarter: The Cardinals trailed and led by as many as three in the third period but a three from Sydney Offield with less than 20 seconds remaining, to put Jewell back on top 43-42 at the end of the quarter. 
  • 4thQuarter: Black Hills State took a four point lead early in the fourth but after a free throw from Mussorici tied it at 50 the two teams traded buckets over the final five minutes to end regulation knotted at 56. 
  • Overtime: A layup by Offield put the Cardinals on top by one with just under two minutes to play but Jewell was outscored 4-0 over the final minute to fall by a 66-62 margin.

  • The Cardinals forced 19 turnovers leading to 20 points. 
  • Black Hills scored 16 second-chance points. 
  • Jewell shot 37.5 percent from the floor, compared to 42 percent by the Yellowjackets.
