Defense Holds Hawks Scoreless in Second Half but Cardinals Fall, 23-17

Despite a solid second half performance from the William Jewell defense, the Cardinals came up short in Saturday night's Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup versus Quincy University. The loss drops Jewell to 1-8 on the season and 1-6 in conference play. In all seven appearances between these two teams the road team has walked away with the victory. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q (12:24) After recovering an onside kick to begin the game, the Quincy took the early lead with a 19-yard field goal. (3-0, QU)
  • 1Q (7:17) The Hawks kept their early momentum rolling by capping off a six-play possession with a touchdown. (10-0, QU)
  • 1Q (0:59) Jewell was able to get on the board when quarterback Will Schneider scrambled into the end zone from nine yards out. (10-7, QU)
  • 2Q (9:55) The Hawks extended their lead with a 32-yard touchdown pass. (17-7 QU)
  • 2Q (5:27) Another Quincy touchdown pass improves its lead, but Jewell was able to block the extra-point attempt. (23-7, QU) 
  • 3Q (7:56) Dalton Dye puts three more points on the board for Jewell with a 28-yard field goal. (23-10, QU)
  • 4Q (6:46) Rye'll Dydell capped off a 14-play possession for Jewell by punching his way over the goal line. (23-17 QU)

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals accumulated more total first downs than the Hawks at 23-17. 
  • Jewell recorded 160 yards in the ground game compared to 130 from Quincy.  
  • The Cardinal offense combined for 221 yards in its air attack. 
  • The Cardinal defense was able to hold the Quincy offense off the scoreboard in the second half.
