Cardinals Fall to No. 7 Queens to Open 2018-19 Season

The William Jewell men's basketball team gave the No. 7 ranked Queens University all it could handle for over 37 minutes but dropped the season opener 101-87. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Half: A jumper by Keith Hayes put the Cardinals on top by nine with under nine minutes to play in the opening period. Mason Alexander followed with a three, just under three minutes later to give the Cardinals their biggest lead of the game at 11 points. Queens closed the half however on a 15-0 run to put the Cardinals in a seven point hole at the break. 
  • 2nd Half: Jewell trailed by as many as 14 early in the second half before climbing their way back behind six points from Mason to pull within two with under ten to play. Queens expanded their lead back to double digits before another Jewell run made it an 88-85 game with just 4:27 remaining. The Royals went on a quick 8-0 run to put the game out of reach. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals shot an impressive 47 percent from the floor as a team but Queens was also hot, coming in at 52 percent, including 48 percent from behind the three point line. 
  • Jewell was out-rebounded 47-19 which led to 13 second chance points for Queens. 
  • The Cardinals forced 15 turnovers which led to 24 points.
