On a night celebrating head coach
Larry Holley's 900th win, the William Jewell men's basketball by gave him win No. 903 with a 91-72 victory over Missouri S&T. The Cards move to 17-5 on the season and 7-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Cardinals got off to a fast start leading Missouri S&T 17-5 just over four minutes into the game. The Miners responded with a 24-9 run to go on top 29-28 with 6:24 to play in the opening half. The Cardinals pushed the lead back double digits before the break, led by nine points from Pharroh Gordon during the run.
- The Miners pulled within 11 early in the second half but Jewell continued rolling, increasing the lead to as many as 18 with under four minutes to play. A layup by Gordon gave Jewell their biggest advantage of the night at 88-67 with just over two minutes to play as the Cards cruised to the 91-72 win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinals won the battle in the paint 50-36.
- Jewell was outrebounded 44-30, and allowed the Miners 19 offensive boards.
- The Cards committed just 11 turnovers to the Miners' 18, leading to 23 points.
- Jewell returned to their regular shooting marks, hitting nearly 56 percent of their shots, while holding Missouri S&T 39 percent.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Gordon led all scorers with a career high 28 points on 13-of-15 shooting, while adding three assists and steals.
- Keith Hayes added 22 points while Patrick Whelan chipped in 16.
- Eysan Wiley pulled down a team leading nine rebounds.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- The win gives Holley his 903rd career victory which moves him into sole possession of ninth place on the all-time men's basketball wins list, surpassing Bob Knight.
- The 17 wins is the best in a single season at Jewell since the Cards went 25-8 during the 2010-11 season.
- Wiley's one blocked shot puts him at 25th on Jewell's all-time single season blocks list. Senior Emil Ostafiicuic also recorded a rejection, the 71st of his career, which puts him one away from tying Adam Stout (2001-05) for for eighth on the all-time list.
