Fourth Quarter Rally Comes Up Short at UIS

The William Jewell women's basketball team saw a fourth quarter rally fall just short, dropping a 59-58 decision at Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals fall to 11-10 overall and 8-6 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: The Cardinals started slowly on the offensive end shooting just 23 percent and trailing 17-10 after the first ten minutes.
  • 2Q: The shooting woes continued in the second quarter as an 8-2 UIS run extended the lead to 33-18 with two minutes remaining in the half. Natalie Closser scored the final four points of the period to bring Jewell within 33-22 at the intermission.
  • 3Q: The two teams traded buckets for much of the third quarter as each time the Cards rallied, UIS responded to maintain a double digit lead. The Prairie Stars hit a three with 5:46 to play in the period to grab their biggest advantage of the day at 41-26. From there the Cardinals regrouped, closing the frame on a 11-5 run to make it a 46-37 game heading in to the final period.
  • 4Q: UIS pushed the lead back to 11 before Sydney Offield hit Jewell's first three pointer of the game to pull within eight with 7:25 to play. Just over a minute later Katie Finn scored five consecutive points to get the Cards within two at 48-46. After the Prairie Stars pushed the lead back to six the Cards rallied again as Finn's jumper with ten seconds on the clock gave Jewell their first lead of the day, 58-57. Unfortunately for Jewell, UIS hit two free throws with four seconds remaining and Kayla Harrell's last second shot attempt was just long allowing the Prairie Stars to escape with the one point win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Despite the polar opposite starts, the shooting percentages nearly evened out by game's end as Jewell hit 34 percent of their shots with UIS connecting on 38 percent.
  • Jewell struggled from the three, going 2-for-18 on the day.
  • The Cardinals dominated the glass 45-32, including pulling down 18 offensive boards which is the third highest this season.
  • The Jewell bench outscored UIS 18-4.

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Harrell led the Cardinals with 16 points while Closser added 13.
  • Lindsey McCoy posted a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Sydney Offield added nine boards.

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • After earning her first double-double of the season on Thursday, McCoy has now posted back-to-back double-doubles and boasts double-digit rebounds in three of the past six games.
  • Finn scored all nine of her points in the fourth quarter.

UP NEXT
