The William Jewell softball team opened the 2018 season with two wins at the Emporia State Six State Classic. The Cardinals downed Southwest Baptist 6-1 in the opener and followed with a walk off 5-4 win over Northeastern State in the nightcap.
GAME 1 (Southwest Baptist)
FINAL SCORE: 6-1, Win
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Inning - The Cardinals opened the scoring with two runs in the first inning. Madi Giles and Brooke Bernard each walked and came around to score on a single from Kelsey Morgan and a passed ball, respectively.
- 3rd Inning - Giles led off the inning with a double scored on a bases loaded walk from Morgan. Morgan and Emily Hoover then scored on a single to center off the bat of Phoebe Dabbour to put Jewell on top 5-0.
- 5th Inning - The Bearcats got on the board with a home run by Lauren Strobel.
- 5th Inning - Jewell got the run back when Allison Rawls put a single to left to scoring Morgan.
PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher:
Anna Biondo (1-0) - Allowed just four hits over seven innings
Losing Pitcher: Alexis Dock (0-2) - Appeared in two innings, giving up three earned runs on three hits and four walks
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Morgan led Jewell with two hits, two runs, two RBI, and two walks.
- Giles scored two runs and posted a double.
- Dabbour collected two RBI on one hit
GAME 2 (Northeastern State)
FINAL SCORE: 6-5, Win
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Inning - The Cardinals exploded in the opening inning with four runs to take and early lead. Lindsay Glynn singled and advanced to third on a throwing error and passed ball before scoring on a single from Giles. A single from Hoover scored Giles while Bernard, who had walked, crossed the plate on a single off the bat of Morgan. Hoover came around to score on a single up the middle from Dabbour.
- 2nd Inning - The RiverHawks got on the board with two runs in the second frame. Kyla Ibarra doubled to score Kaleigh Hinkle and Jessica Boone.
- 3rd Inning - Northeastern added a run in the third with a RBI single by Jess Schuler.
- 5th Inning - The RiverHawks tied the game at four with a sacrifice fly by Boone.
- 7th Inning - Bernard reached base on a fielder's choice and was pinch ran for by Tori Farr. Farr scored the winning run on a walk off double from Hoover.
PITCHING
Winning Pitcher:
Madelynne Greenstreet (1-0) - Posted a career best 13 strikeouts while allowing six hits and six walks
Losing Pitcher: Sydney Balderrama (2-3) - Allowed five earned runs on eight hits
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Giles and Hoover each grabbed two hits, while Hoover chipped in two RBI.
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- With her game one double Giles now needs just nine to break the Jewell career record
- Greenstreet's 13 strikeouts are the most by any Cardinal pitcher since Maria Buckingham's 12 opposite Illinois Springfield on April 1, 2012.
