The William Jewell softball team has matched its best start since 2011 by going 4-0 in the opening weekend of the season. On Sunday the Cardinals downed Emporia State 6-3 followed by a shutout of Central Missouri 5-0 in the nightcap.
GAME 1 (Emporia State)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- T3: Courtney Beatty led off the third inning with her first home run of her Jewell career to give Jewell and early lead. Tori Farr then walked and came around on a throwing error by the Hornets followed by a sacrifice fly from Madi Giles. Lindsay Glynn and Emily Hoover also scored runs for the Cardinals in the frame. (5-0, Jewell)
- B4: The Hornets scored an unearned run on a single to left field. (5-1, Jewell)
- B6: A Cardinal error allowed two runs to cross the plate in the sixth inning. (5-3, Jewell)
- T7: Giles and Brooke Bernard roped back-to-back doubles to left center to push the lead back to three. (6-3, Jewell)
PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher:
Anna Biondo (2-0) - Tossed a complete game with five strikeouts and one earned run
Losing Pitcher: Kelsey Phillips (2-4) - Allowed two earned runs on three hits over 2.2 innings of work

- Giles led the Cardinals with two hits while Bernard posted two RBI.
GAME 2 (Central Missouri)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- T1: The Cardinals took advantage of early struggles by UCM starter Jordan Johnson, drawing four walks leading to a run in the first frame. (1-0, Jewell)
- T2: A single up the middle off the bat of Bernard scored Giles who had also singled. (2-0, Jewell)
- T5: Hoover and Kelsey Morgan reached base on a hit-by-pitch and scored on a three run blast from Phoebe Dabbour. (5-0, Jewell)
PITCHING
Winning Pitcher:
Madelynne Greenstreet (2-0) - Tossed a complete game two-hit shutout while striking out nine
Losing Pitcher: Jordan Johnson (2-1) - Allowed five earned runs on five hits and four walks

- Dabbour collected four RBI on one hit and a walk.

- With her game one double Giles now needs just eight to break the Jewell career record.
