Balanced Effort Leads Cardinals to Win Over UIndy

The William Jewell women's basketball team downed Indianapolis 74-66 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center to move to 12-11 on the season and 9-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: Indianapolis opened the game with a 13-8 lead before the Cardinals closed the first quarter on a 9-2 run, led by five points from Natalie Closser, to lead 17-15. 
  • 2Q: After the Greyhounds took a brief 18-17 lead at the 8:30 mark of the period, Jewell exploded for a 13-2 run, highlighted by a three at the buzzer by Rhyann Fisher to hold a 31-20 halftime advantage. 
  • 3Q: The Cardinal offense continued to roll into the third quarter, expanding the lead to as many as 18 on two three pointers a piece from Katie Finn and Kaiti Butaud. UIndy scored the final five points of the period to trail Jewell 54-41 after 30 minutes of play. 
  • 4Q: The Greyhounds made things interesting in the fourth quarter, outscoring Jewell 19-8 over the first six minutes of the period to pull within 62-60 with 4:54 remaining. Butaud's third three of the day pushed the Jewell lead back to five and the Cardinals were able to ice the game, hitting 6-of-8 free throws down the stretch. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Jewell forced the Greyhounds into 18 turnovers leading to 22 points. 
  • The Jewell bench outscored UIndy's bench 27-6. 
  • The Cardinals shot 39 percent from behind the three point line, which is the best mark since February 1 vs. Missouri S&T. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
  • Kayla Harrell led the Cards with 16 points, two assists, two steals, and two blocks.
  • Finn and Lindsey McCoy each added 11 points. McCoy also pulled down seven rebounds, while Finn had three assists. 
  • Butaud and Fisher chipped in nine points a piece.  

UP NEXT
The Cardinals head into the final week of the regular season as they travel to Truman State University next Thursday followed by a home matchup with Drury on Saturday.
