The William Jewell baseball team took two out of three games from Christian Brothers University over the weekend at Talley Stadium. The Cardinals dropped game one 6-5, before taking the final two by scores of 18-5 and 8-6 to open the 2018 season 2-1.
GAME 1
FINAL SCORE: 5-6, Loss
HOW IT HAPPENED
- T1: Jaime Soto doubled to score Larry Hubbard (1-0, CBU)
- B1: Nate Pecota scored on a single by Christian Chalabi. (1-1)
- B3: Tyler Carpenter singled and came around to score on a triple by Chalabi. (2-1, Jewell)
- T5: The Buccaneers tied the game on a balk scoring Taylor Angley-Holman (2-2)
- T7: Jared Cramer tripled to score Soto, Hubbard, and Angley-Holman, followed by an RBI single by Parker Jordan. (6-2, CBU)
- B7: Chalabi roped a double to score Carpenter and Ben Pautler. (6-4, CBU)
- B8: Trent Bollman walked and scored on a passed ball. (6-5, CBU)

HOW IT HAPPENED
- B1: The Cardinals opened with two runs on free passes as Pecota and Chase Averitt posted RBI walk and hit-by-pitch. Luke Viestenz singled to score Pecota before senior Brendan Carney came up in the clutch with a bases clearing triple. (6-0, Jewell)
- T2: Two errors led to a CBU run as Luke Wewers scored on a Hubbard single. (6-1, Jewell)
- B2: Averitt pushed the lead back to six with a sacrifice fly scoring Pautler. Chalabi and Carpenter then scored on a single from Bollman followed by Viestenz and Tyler Murphy crossing the plate on a double off the bat of Carney.
- T3: The Bucs scored four runs on two hits and a Cardinal error in the third. (11-5, Jewell)
- B3: Pautler led off the third frame with a double and scored on a ground out RBI by Carpenter.
- B4: Another triple, this time from Chalabi scored Pecota, Carney, and Viestenz followed by a double by Averitt to score Chalabi. (16-5, Jewell)
- B5: Nick Gavin doubled and came around to score on an error by the Bucs. (17-5, Jewell)
- B6: Bollman scored to score Carpenter who had reached base on an error. (18-5, Jewell)

Zach Hutcherson (1-0) - Posted five strikeouts in three innings while allowing four earned runs
Losing Pitcher: Will Rutledge (0-3) - Allowed seven earned runs in just one inning of work on two hits, three walks, and three hit-by-pitch

- Bollman led the Cardinals with three hits and four RBI while Carney added two and five respectively
- Viestenz also added two hits.
- Pecota, Pautler, Carpener, Chalbi, and Viestenz all scored at least two runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- T1: Soto scored on a single by Jordan. (1-0, CBU)
- B5: Back-to-back doubles off the left center field wall by Carpenter and Chalabi tied the game at one. Chase Averitt followed with his first collegiate home run, a two run bomb to center. (3-1, Jewell)
- T6: CBU responded with two runs on four hits to tie the game at three. (3-3)
- B7: Chalabi and Averitt led off the seventh inning with a walk and double and scored on a wild pitch and a a sac fly respectively. A two RBI double from Pautler extended the lead while a wild pitch allowed Pecota to once again. (8-3, Jewell)
- T9: The Bucs made things interesting with three runs on one hit and two Jewell errors. (8-6, Jewell)

Reed Pegram (1-0) - Did not allow a run in 1.2 innings of work
Losing Pitcher: Gil Erwin (0-2) - Allowed two earned runs on two hits and a walk

- Chalabi scored two runs while drawing four walks.
