Jewell Comes Up Short at Truman State, 90-85

The William Jewell men's basketball team nearly pulled off a double digit come back but fell just short 90-85 to Truman State on Thursday on the road. With the loss the Cardinals fall to 19-8 overall and 9-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell took an early 16-11 lead on two free throws from Byron Harp with 10:49 to play in the opening half only to see Truman tie the game at 16 just 37 seconds later. The Bulldogs continued on a 17-2 run over the next four minutes to take a 29-18 lead with under six minutes remaining in the half. Truman hit two three pointers to close the half with Jewell trailing 41-25.
  • The Bulldogs grew their lead to as many as 18 before the Cardinals mounted a comeback. With under 12 minutes to play Jewell went on 20-7 run to pull within three at 63-60 with 5:39 remaining. Truman pushed the lead back to double digits with a 10-2 run and led by 11 with just 1:17 on the clock. The Cards made things interesting in the final minute with four three pointers, two a piece from Patrick Whelan and Nick Bradley to get as close 82-80 but the Bulldogs made good on 8-of-10 free throws over the last 48 seconds to escape with the five point win.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals outscored the Bulldogs 60-49 in the second half, shooting nearly 54 percent from the floor.
  • Truman owned the paint outscoring the Cardinals 50-28, but it was Jewell who took advantage of nine offensive rebounds, leading to 17 points.
