Cardinals Post 22 Hits in Sweep of Drury

The William Jewell softball pounded out 22 hits, the most in a double header this season, in a sweep of Drury University on Saturday afternoon at the Spratt Sports Complex. With the sweep, the Cardinals move to 17-9 on the season and 4-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME 1
Final
: 12-4, Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: The Cardinals exploded in the opening frame, scoring ten runs on six hits. After RBI from Brooke Bernard, Courtney Beatty, and Kelsey Morgan, sophomore Sarah Lewis blasted a grand slam to put the Cardinals on top 7-0. Later in the inning Bernard, batting for the second time in the frame, sent a three run shot to center to make it a ten run game early. (10-0, Jewell)
  • B4: Jewell added a run on an RBI double from Beatty to push the lead to 11 after four innings. (11-0, Jewell)
  • T5: The Panthers held off the run-rule momentarily and extended the game by scoring four runs on four hits and two Cardinal errors in the top of the fifth. (11-4, Jewell)
  • B5: Lewis again posted a big hit with a lead off double and advanced on a sacrifice from Ashlyn Sutton before stealing home to score the 12th run which ended the game early. (12-4, Jewell)

PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Anna Biondo (7-5) earned her seventh win of the season, allowing just one earned run on six hits. 
Losing Pitcher: Hailly Greenough (3-3) suffered the loss after allowing five earned runs without recording an out.

Final: 10-5, Win

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: The Cardinals jumped on top early once again with two runs on RBI from Bernard and Lewis in the opening frame. (2-0, Jewell)
  • B2: Jewell added a run in the second as Taylor Alarcon doubled to score Biondo who reached base via the walk. (3-0, Jewell)
  • T3: The Panthers got on the board in the third inning with a single run on a sacrifice fly. (3-1, Jewell)
  • B3: The Cards enjoyed another big innig, scoring four runs on four hits, including RBI doubles from Beatty and Morgan. (7-1, Jewell)
  • T4: Drury got one run back with an RBI single from Megan Tersteeg in the fourth. (7-2, Jewell)
  • T5: The Panthers pulled within four with a run on two hits in the fifth inning but Beatty recovered from a passed ball to throw out a runner attempting to score to squash a big rally. 
  • B5: With momentum their way, Jewell tacked on three runs on three hits, including another double from Alarcon. (10-3, Jewell)
  • T6: Drury took advantage of a Cardinal error to add a run and pull within six. (10-4, Jewell)
  • T7: The Panthers added an additional run in the final inning to bring the score to the final of 10-5. 

PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Lewis (3-2) earned the win, tossing three innings of work in relief, allowing just two earned runs. 
Losing Pitcher: Kasey Cazares (2-4) took the loss, giving up ten earned runs on 11 hits.
