The William Jewell softball team split a double header at Newman University on Wednesday afternoon, dropping the opener 5-4 before taking game two 4-1 in eight innings. The Cardinals move to 11-3 on the season with the split.
Game 1
FINAL: 5-4, Loss
HOW IT HAPPENED
- T3: Madi Giles reached on an error followed by a single from Brooke Bernard to put two on for Emily Hoover who blasted her first home run of the season over the left field wall. (3-0, Jewell)
- B5: Four hits and two Cardinal errors led to four runs for the Jets who took a 4-3 lead in the fifth inning. (4-3, NU)
- T6: Kelsey Morgan tied the game with a lead off home run in the top of the sixth inning. (4-4)
- B7: Newman scored one run on a hit and two errors in the bottom of the seventh to steal a 5-4 win. (5-4, NU)
PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Chanel Purcella (1-4) allowed three earned runs on six hits while striking out four.
Losing Pitcher:
Anna Biondo (5-2) suffered the loss allowing four earned runs with four strikeouts.
Save: Nique Payne (2) picked up the save after working two innings, giving up no runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- B6: The Jets got on the board first with an RBI walk after five scoreless innings. (1-0, Jewell)
- T7: Courtney Beatty lead off the seventh with a double and scored on a single off the bat of Anna Biondo. (1-1)
- T8: With international tie breaker rules in effect, Biondo advanced to third on a fly ball to center and scored on a single up by the middle by Beatty. Madelynne Greenstreet stepped to the plate with two runners in scoring position and doubled to make it a three run game. (4-1, Jewell)
PITCHERS
Winning Pitcher: Greenstreet (4-1) threw a career best eight innings, allowing just five hits and a single earned run with ten strikeouts.
Losing Pitcher: Bailey Bugner (1-7) allowed three earned on 11 hits.
