Tolberd Named All-Tournament as Cardinals Split Day Two of Washburn Invite

The William Jewell volleyball team earned the first win of the 2018-2019 school year with a 3-2 victory over Colorado-Colorado Springs. Earlier in the day the Cards fell 3-1 to Dallas Baptist to sit 1-3 after the opening weekend of the season. 

GAME 1 - Dallas Baptist (20-25, 25-19, 22-25, 19-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET ONE: The Cardinals fell into an early hole and trailed by as many as seven. After a timeout, Jewell made a push outscoring DBU 8-3 to pull within 19-17 before a service error ended the rally. DBU won six of the final nine points to take the set. 
  • SET TWO: In set two it was the Cardinals who grabbed the early advantage, leading by as many as six on their way to a 25-19 win in a set they never trailed. 
  • SET THREE: Jewell made a late rally in the third after falling behind early. The Cardinals scored five of the final six points but fell just short, 25-22. 
  • SET FOUR: Jewell fell into another early hole in the finale, trailing by as many as seven before falling 25-19. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • After the opening set, both teams struggled offensively as the Cardinals hit just .156 for the match while their opponents were held to a .170 clip. 
  • Jewell again posted double-digit blocks for the second time in three games with 11.

GAME 2 - Colorado-Colorado Springs (23-25, 26-24, 25-19, 26-28, 15-8)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • SET ONE: After falling behind early, the Cardinals rallied to tie the game at 17 and eventually took a 23-21 lead, following a kill from Grace Baucom. The Lions did not go quietly however, scoring the final four points of the set to win 25-23. 
  • SET TWO: Jewell opened an early six point lead behind six errors from CCSU. The Lions tied the set at 18 and held set point at 24-23 before a Megan Rhule ace and two errors by CCSU lifted the Cards to the 26-24 win. 
  • SET THREE: Set three was a back-and-forth affair before a 7-3 Jewell run opened up a 20-14 advantage in favor of the Cardinals. While the Lions made a late rally, Tori Vogt and Elizabeth Quinn insured the win for Jewell with two kills a piece.
  • SET FOUR: Another close set, no team could maintain a lead of more than two points. Tied 24-24 the Lions recorded four kills to take the set 28-26.  
  • SET FIVE: After a tough loss in set four the Cardinals came out firing in the finale opening a 8-1 lead, led by two kills from Baucom. The Lions got on track offensively but Jewell did not let up getting kills from Vogt, Jenna Rau, and Harper Auman to secure the 15-8 win.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals posted their highest attack percentage of the young season at .231 while holding the Lions to just .154.
  • For the third time in four games, Jewell posted double-digit blocks with 11. 
  • Jewell recorded 10 service aces while committing six receiving errors. 

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • For her work, the senior libero Tolberd was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 5.47 digs per set and recording nearly 100 total on the weekend. The senior now needs just 251 to break the all-time career record.
