Jewell Battles but Falls to Bellarmine in Five

The William Jewell volleyball team put up a battle on Friday night coming from two sets down to force the fifth set but fell 3-2 to Bellarmine University in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The Cardinals fall to 3-14 on the season and 0-7 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED (14-25, 23-25, 25-19, 26-24, 7-15)
  • Set One: The Cardinals fell into a hole trailing by as many as seven in the early going before mounting a rally. Kills from Grace Baucom and Paityn Hardison helped pull Jewell within four but the Knights closed the set on a 15-8 run to win the opener.
  • Set Two: After Bellarmine tied the set at 17 the Cardinals got kills from Hardison, Jenna Rau, and Elizabeth Quinn to take a 22-20 lead and force a BU timeout. From there the Knights rallied and scored five of the final six points to take the set.
  • Set Three: Jewell came out of the break determined, taking advantage of 11 Bellarmine errors to open up a 16-9 lead. The Knights pulled within three at 18-15 but two kills from Rau helped push the Cards over the hump, 25-19.
  • Set Four: The Cardinals jumped out to another early lead in set four behind two kills from Maddie Wingert. The Knights tied the set at 20 and staved off set point until a kill from Hardison and an attack error forced the fifth and deciding set.
  • Set Five: Jewell could not get the offense going in the finale, falling into a 10-3 hole. Quinn helped hold off the Knights with a kill and a block but Bellarmine eventually took the set, 15-7.
