Cardinals Win at Rockhurst 72-51

The William Jewell women's basketball team went crosstown on a snowy Saturday to down the Rockhurst Hawks by a score of 72-51 to move to 8-5 overall and 2-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: Leading 10-9 midway through the first quarter, the Cardinals closed the frame on a 7-2 run, capped by an offensive rebound put-back by Kelsi York to take 17-11 lead after 10 minutes.   
  • 2nd Quarter: The Hawks opened the second quarter by taking a 20-19 lead before Jewell went on another run led by 14 combined points from Kiara Bradley and Antoinette Mussorici to hold a 33-24 advantage at the break. 
  • 3rd Quarter: Jewell opened the second half on a 9-1 run, capped by a three from Bradley, to push the lead to 17 just over two minutes into the third quarter. With under a minute remaining in the frame, Mussorici nailed back-to-back threes to put Jewell on top 55-39. 
  • 4th Quarter: The Cardinals continued to apply pressure in the final 10 minutes as a layup by Kayla Harrell gave Jewell their largest lead of the day at 66-46. Jewell and the Hawks traded baskets over the final minutes and a Mussorici free throw with 44 seconds on the clock brought the score to the final of 72-51. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals dominated the paint, outscoring the Hawks 30-12. 
  • Jewell shot 50 percent from the field, and connected on seven three-point field goals, while holding the Hawks to 33 percent from the floor and just 15 percent from behind the arc. 
  • The Cardinals out-rebounded Rockhurst 37-20, including pulling down 10 offensive boards.
