The William Jewell women's basketball team nearly pulled off the upset of No. 18/10 Lewis University in Romeoville, Illinois on Thursday evening but fell late by a score of 84-72. The final score did not tell the story of how closely the Cardinals pushed one of the nation's top teams but nonetheless the loss drops Jewell to 9-7 overall and 3-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter: Both teams came out firing early in the first quarter, combining for 14 points in the first three minutes of play. Neither team could take more than a two point lead until a 6-0 spurt by the Flyers pushed them ahead 20-14 but a jumper by Sydney Offield made it a 20-16 game after 10 minutes.
- 2nd Quarter: Buckets by Kayla Harrell and Kiara Bradley cut the Lewis lead to just two at the six minute mark of the second quarter but the Flyers maintained the lead throughout the frame and held a 35-28 advantage at the half.
- 3rd Quarter: The Cardinals came out of the locker room on a mission as they scored seven of the first nine points, including five from Antoinette Mussorici to pull within two just 90 seconds into the half. A layup from Natalie Closser brought Jewell within one but the Flyers outscored the Cards 16-6 over the final seven minutes to take their biggest lead of the game at 10 points.
- 4th Quarter: Jewell did not go quietly in the fourth quarter as Harrell hit a three, followed by buckets from Mussorici and Natalie Denzer to quickly cut the lead back to three and force a Lewis timeout. The Flyers expanded the lead back to nine but again Jewell responded as another three from Harrell made it a 73-70 game with just 1:38 to play but the Cardinals were forced to foul down the stretch leading to the nine point loss.
