Cardinals Fall to No. 4 Drury

The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 71-46 decision to No. 4 Drury University on Thursday evening in the Mabee Center. The loss drops the Cardinals to 6-5 overall and 0-3 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: The Cardinals got off to a slow start, falling into a 14-4 hold midway through the opening quarter but a three from Natalie Denzer ended the skid and brought Jewell within seven. The Cardinals hung with the fourth-ranked team the rest of the quarter and trailed 23-12 after one frame. 
  • 2nd Quarter: Drury opened the second quarter with a 10-2 run top expand their lead to 19 at the halfway point of the period. A layup from Kiara Bradley, followed by free throws from Sydney Offield made it a 42-25 game at the break. 
  • 3rd Quarter: Jewell opened the second half strong, as a three by Kayla Harrell with under seven to go brought the Cards within 13 but another 10-2 spurt from the Panthers pushed the lead to 21 four minutes later. Offield hit a three with 22 seconds on the clock to pull Jewell within 18 heading into the final quarter. 
  • 4th Quarter: The Cardinals could come no closer as Drury expanded their lead to as many as 30 in the fourth period before the Cardinals hit five free throws to bring the game to the final of 71-46. 

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals were held to a 30 percent clip from the floor for the game while the Panthers connected on 51 percent of shots. 
  • From the carhity stripe, Jewell took advantage, connecting on 9-of-10 compared to just 9-of-19. 
  • Both teams pulled down 33 boards, while the Cardinals boasted 12 on the offensive end.
