Big First Half Leads Cardinals to Win Over Missouri S&T

The William Jewell women's basketball team used a strong opening half to down Missouri S&T 78-63 for their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season. The Cardinals move to 7-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: Jewell jumped out to an 11-1 lead five minutes into the game as all five starters scored in the opening minutes. The Cardinals hit four free throws in the closing minutes of the quarter to make it a 17-9 game after 10 minutes. 
  • 2nd Quarter: The Cards extended their lead to 17 with two minutes to play in the opening half as Kelsi York and Kiara Bradley each hit two three-point shots. A layup from Lea Finn put Jewell on top by 21 but the Miners' Kristin Steins hit a jumper just before the buzzer to make it 42-23 in favor of the Cardinals at the break. 
  • 3rd Quarter: Jewell got on to a strong start in the third quarter, as two free throws Sydney Offield gave the Cardinals their largest lead of the game at 24. The Miners cut the lead to 20 with just over four minutes left in the period but a quick 6-0 run by the Cardinals pushed the lead to 26 heading into the final frame. 
  • 4th Quarter: Missouri S&T cut the lead to just 13 with under a minute to play but a Natalie Denzer bucket put the game on ice for the 78-63 win.  

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals pulled down 13 offensive rebounds, leading to nine second-chance points. 
  • Jewell shot 39 percent from the floor, while hitting 10 three point field goals.

  • Scoring: Antoinette Mussorici (13), Bradley (13), Offield (12), York (11)
  • Rebounding: Offield (12)
  • Assists: Mussorici (5), Offield (4)
  • Steals: Bradley (3), Offield (4)

YOU SHOULD NOTE
  • Offield surpassed her previous career-high with 12 rebounds, including three on the offensive ends.
