Cardinals Outlast Southwest Baptist in Five Sets

The William Jewell volleyball team survived Southwest Baptist on Saturday in the Mabee Center in five sets by scores of 21-25, 25-13, 25-14, 19-25, 15-13. The Cardinals improve to 7-13 overall and 3-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action.

How it Happened
  • With the Cardinals leading by three in the opening set, Southwest Baptist went on a 8-4 run to take a 21-20 lead. Jewell committed three errors over the final five points to give SBU the set.
  • The Cardinals wasted little time responding in the second set, jumping out to a 23-12 lead behind four kills each from Lily Johnson, Paityn Hardison, and Grace Baucom
  • Tied at four in set three, Jewell went on an 14-7 run on their way to a 25-14 win, led by six kills from Elizabeth Quinn.
  • The fourth set was a back-and-forth affair but SBU scored the final five points of the set to force the deciding finale.
  • Jewell jumped on top 12-8 in the finale only to see the Bearcats rally and pull within one at 14-13 but a Maddie Wingert kill ended the threat.

For the Cardinals
  • Quinn led the Cardinals with a season-high 16 kills on a .583 attack percentage while Johnson added 10, tying her career-high. Quinn also had seven blocks.
  • Megan Rhule dished out 25 assists with Lauren Castaneda had 23.
  • Kennedy Ruckh finished with 24 kills while Mary Booton chipped in 10.
