The William Jewell women's basketball team used a big fourth quarter to hold off Missouri S&T 74-68 on Thursday night in Rolla, Mo. With the win, the Cardinals move to 14-11 on the season and 8-9 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play, while clinching a spot in the GLVC Championship Tournament next week in Evansville, Ind.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter: The Cardinals struggled out of the gate, falling in a 7-2 hole before a three by Sydney Offield and layup from Natalie Closser closed the gap to 11-9. The Miners outscored Jewell 6-3 over the final 2:40 and held a 17-12 lead after one.
- 2nd Quarter: Jewell fell behind again in the second quarter by as many as 12 but back-to-back buckets from Natalie Denzer ended the skid. Antoinette Mussorici nailed a layup as time expired and made it a seven point game at the half.
- 3rd Quarter: The Cardinals came out of the half and immediately closed the gap, outscoring Missouri S&T 9-2 over the first four minutes to tie the game at 38. The Miners outscored Jewell 13-6 over the second half of the third period and entered the final frame trailing by seven.
- 4th Quarter: Jewell opened the final quarter on an 18-8 run to take a 62-59 lead with 4:42 on the clock. The Miners responded with a 7-0 run of their own to retake a four point advantage. From there the Cardinals gained control as Closser and Kiara Bradley combined for nine points over the final two and half minutes and held on for the six point win.

- Jewell overcame shooting just 37 percent from the floor by forcing the Miners into 25 turnovers leading to 27 points.

- Offield tied her career high with 12 rebounds which she previously set earlier this season on January 12, also against Missouri S&T.
- With the win, Jewell secures their spot in the GLVC Championship Tournament next week. This will be the sixth trip to the postseason since the move to NCAA-II, including their third straight.
