Offense Explodes in 85-60 Win Over Illinois Springfield

The William Jewell women's basketball earned a weekend sweep with an 85-60 victory over Illinois Springfield on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The win lifts the Cardinals to 11-10 overall and 5-8 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1st Quarter: Jewell held the Prairie Stars scoreless through the first 4:48 of the game, as they opened a 7-0 lead. The Cardinals continued their first quarter onslaught, pushing the lead to 16 by the end of the frame. 
  • 2nd Quarter: The momentum did not stop for the Cardinals as Jewell scored five of the first eight points in the second quarter, after a jumper from Macyn Wilbers put the Cards on top 34-15. The Stars hit back-to-back threes to pull within 18 but Jewell closed the half on a 6-0 run, after a three from Kayla Harrell, to make it a 47-23 at the break. 
  • 3rd Quarter: The Cardinals continued to find success in the third quarter, expanding their lead to the biggest of the day at 34 as Sydney Offield nailed a three with just over 30 seconds remaining in the frame. 
  • 4th Quarter: UIS outscored the Cardinals in the fourth quarter but Jewell maintained their big lead, thanks to a three from Lea Finn and a late bucket by Kalli Murphy

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Cardinals dominated the glass, pulling down a season-high 50 rebounds compared to just 26 by Illinois Springfield. 
  • Jewell shot 51 percent from the field and a blistering 69 percent from three, while holding the Stars to just 30 percent from the floor.
