The William Jewell women's basketball team used a 26-point third quarter to down Truman State 86-72 on Thursday evening in the Mabee Center. The win improves Jewell to 12-10 on the year and 6-8 in Great Lakes Valley Conference action, while the Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the national polls drops to 19-5 and 10-4 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1st Quarter: The Cardinals came out hot, jumping out to a 10-3 lead after a traditional three point play by Antoinette Mussorici. The Bulldogs battled back to tie the game at 14 before Sydney Offield hit two triples in the last 28 seconds to put Jewell back on top 19-14.
- 2nd Quarter: Mussorici and Kayla Harrell combined for the first 14 points of the second period for the Cardinals as they extended the lead to seven just under four minutes in. Truman hit a layup with 38 seconds on the clock to make it a 40-35 game at the break.
- 3rd Quarter: The Bulldogs pulled within two just 56 seconds into the second half before Jewell went on a run, outscoring Truman 26-6 over the final nine minutes of the period to take their biggest lead of the day at 66-48.
- 4th Quarter: Truman cut the lead to 13 with just over seven minutes to play but the Cardinals got six points from Kiara Bradley over the last four minutes to keep the Bulldogs at bay.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Jewell shot 48 percent from the floor and 46 percent from the three point line while holding one of the GLVC's top long range shooting teams to a 31 percent from the arc.
- The Cardinals hit a season-high 11 three-point shots.
