Cardinals Rally to Earn Tie at No. 4 Illinois Springfield

The William Jewell baseball team nearly rallied to knock off No. 4 Illinois Springfield on Friday evening before the game was called due to darkness after nine innings. The Cardinals, who played Friday's games as the home team despite being on the road, dropped the opening game of the doubleheader 10-1 to move to 5-5-1 on the season. 

GAME ONE

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T3: Illinois Springfield jumped on the board first with three runs on three hits and a Cardinal error in the third frame. (3-0, UIS)
  • T6: The Prairie Stars added five more in the sixth inning to push their lead to eight. (8-0, UIS)
  • B6: Jewell crossed the plate in the bottom of the frame as Trent Bollman singled and scored on a RBI base hit from Anthony Hansen. (8-1, UIS)
  • T8: UIS added a run in the top of the eighth on a triple and sacrifice fly from Ruben Markham. (9-1, UIS)
  • T9: The Prairie Stars made is a nine-run game on three hits in the final inning. (10-1, UIS)

ON THE MOUND
  • Winning Pitcher: J. Revels (2-0) earned the win, allowing just four hits while striking out six. 
  • Losing Pitcher: Reed Pegram (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up six earned on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T5: Illinois Springfield got on the board first in game two with an RBI double by Brennan Brogni. (1-0, UIS)
  • T6: A solo home run by Zach Speaker to lead off the sixth inning pushed the UIS lead to two. (2-0, UIS)
  • B8: Jewell cut the lead in half in the eighth as Bollman reached on an error and came around to score after a double of the bat of Chase Redick. (2-1, UIS)
  • B9: Down to their final out, the Cardinals tied the game as Logan Becker walked before crossing the plate on a single from Bollman. (2-2)

ON THE MOUND
  • Starter: Mack Stephenson tossed a gem against the fourth-ranked Stars, giving up just two earned runs on six hits while striking out five. 

UP NEXT
Jewell is scheduled to return home for the first time this season on Tuesday as they host McKendree at 1 p.m.
