Bats Come Alive as Cardinals Down Washburn in Split

The William Jewell softball team traveled to Joplin, Mo. on Friday for the one-day edition of the Terri Mathis-Zenner Memorial Tournament. The Cardinals fell to the host Missouri Southern 9-2 before coming back with a 12-4 win over Washburn to move to 5-5 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: The Cardinals struck first with a run in the top of the first as Lindsay Glynn singled and came around to score on a double off the bat of Courtney Beatty. (1-0, Jewell)
  • B2: MSSU responded immediately with two runs on a Cardinal error to take the lead after one frame. (2-1, MSSU)
  • B3: The Lions added three runs on four hits in the third inning to expand their lead. (5-1, MSSU)
  • T5: Jewell got a run back in the fifth inning as the Cards got back-to-back doubles from Madelynne Greenstreet and Glynn to pull within three. (5-2, MSSU)
  • B9: Missouri Southern added four runs on three hits and pushed their advantage to the final. (9-2, MSSU)

  • Winning Pitcher: Abby Atkin (4-1) earned the win, tossing 6.2 innings of work and striking out five. 
  • Losing Pitcher: Anna Biondo (2-3) suffered the loss, giving up seven earned runs on eight hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: Jewell again jumped out on top in the nightcap putting up five runs on RBI from Beatty, Biondo, and Ashlyn Sutton. (5-0, Jewell)
  • B4: The Ichabods got on the board on a solo home run by Savannah Moore in the fourth inning. (5-1, Jewell)
  • B5: Washburn made things interesting late, scoring three runs on four hits in the fifth frame to pull within one. (5-4, Jewell)
  • T7: The Cardinals broke the game open in their final at-bat, scoring seven runs. A grand slam by by Biondo got things going, followed by RBI from Beatty, Taylor Alarcon, and Emily Hoover (12-4, Jewell)
