Jewell Rally Falls Just Short at No. 16 UIndy

The William Jewell softball team rallied from seven runs down to pull within one late in game two but suffered the sweep at Indianapolis on Friday afternoon, falling 11-11 in the nightcap which followed a 10-2 loss. The Cardinals move to 19-17, 6-10 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

GAME ONE 
Jewell 2, UIndy 10

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: UIndy took advantage of early miscues by the Cardinals, plating five runs on just two hits and three errors in the first inning. (5-0, UIndy)
  • B2: The Greyhounds added a run on a single by Shannon Schuetz. (6-0, UIndy)
  • B4: Schuetz made it a seven run lead with a RBI double in the fourth. (7-0, UIndy)
  • T5: The Cardinals got on the board in the fifth as Anna Biondo walked and came around to score on a home run to center by Lindsay Glynn. (7-2, UIndy)
  • B5: UIndy scored three runs in the fifth to end the game early. (10-2, UIndy)

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Halie Waters (16-6) earned the win, tossing the complete game and allowing just two earned runs. 
  • Loss: Sarah Lewis (3-5) took the loss, allowing 10 runs, but only five earned. 

GAME TWO 
Jewell 10, UIndy 11

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: UIndy jumped out on top in the first inning of game two, scoring a run on a double play. (1-0, UIndy)
  • B2: The Hounds extended their lead with two runs on two hits and a Cardinal miscue in the second. (3-0, UIndy)
  • B3: Back-to-back solo home runs to lead off the third frame push the Greyhound lead to five. (5-0, UIndy)
  • T4: Aly Manhart blasted her second home run of the season, a three run shot, in the fourth to pull Jewell within two runs. (5-3, UIndy)
  • B4: The Greyhounds responded with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the frame. (7-3, UIndy)
  • T5: Greenstreet joined the home run party in the fifth with a solo shot to lead off the inning. (7-4, UIndy)
  • B5: UIndy again responded, scoring four runs on three hits, including a home run and a triple. (11-4, UIndy)
  • T6: The Cardinals refused to go quietly, plating six runs on four hits in the sixth. Madeline Culbertson singled to center to score two, following by RBI outs from Glynn and Courtney Beatty, before Emily Hoover blasted the sixth home run of the game and pull the Cards within one. (11-10, UIndy)

  • Win: Lauren Honkomp (16-3) got the win, working five innings but allowing six earned runs. 
  • Loss: Anna Biondo (8-9) was saddled with the loss, giving up three earned in two frames.

The Cardinals continue GLVC play on Saturday as they travel to Lewis University at 12 p.m.
