Cardinals Post 19 Hits in Split with Emporia State

The William Jewell softball team put up 11 runs on 19 total hits while not committing an error on the day as they split the final non-conference doubleheader of the season. The Cardinals fell to Emporia State 5-4 in the opener before taking the nightcap 7-5 to move to 22-22 on the season.

GAME ONE
Emporia State 5, Jewell 4

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B3: The Cardinals scored first in the opening game of the day as Aly Manhart singled through the left side scoring Lindsay Glynn. (1-0, Jewell)
  • B5: Manhart again came through in the fifth inning with base hit up the middle to plate Emily Hoover who had doubled. (2-0, Jewell)
  • T6: Emporia State got a two-run home run off the bat of Hannah Steeby to tie the game before two doubles plate three more runs for the Hornets. (5-2, ESU)
  • B6: An RBI double by Madelynne Greenstreet in the bottom of the sixth cut the deficit to two. (5-3, ESU)
  • B7: Down to their final at bat, the Cardinals rallied as Courtney Beatty led off the seventh with a double and scored on a single from Hoover to make it a one run game but Jewell could get no closer. (5-4, Jewell)

IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Brylie Bassett (2-1) earned the win, going two frames and striking out three. 
  • Loss: Greenstreet (8-4) took the loss, working five and two-thirds, allowing four runs.  
  • Save: MacKenzie Thornton (1) earned the save, tossing the seventh inning allowing just an unearned run. 

GAME TWO
Jewell 7, Emporia State 5

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • B1: Jewell jumped on top early in the first inning as Glynn singled, swiped her 20th base of the season and scored on a double off the bat of Beatty. (1-0, Jewell)
  • T4: The Hornets took the lead in the fourth as Thornton doubled down the right field line scoring two. (2-1, ESU)
  • B4: The Cardinals responded in the bottom of the frame, plating five runs on four hits, including a two run home run from Manhart. (6-2, Jewell)
  • T5: Emporia State got one run back on a RBI single from Bassett in the fifth. (6-3, Jewell)
  • B6: Greenstreet doubled, stole third base and scored on a wild pitch to push the lead back to four. (7-3, Jewell)
  • T7: The Hornets made things interesting down the stretch as Bassett sent a two-run home run over the left field wall to make it a two run game but Anna Biondo got two pop ups to end the game. (7-5, Jewell)

  • Win: Biondo (9-11) earned the complete game win, allowing five runs with three strikeouts. 
  • Loss: Sydney Righi (6-6) suffered the lossed, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and four walks.

Jewell wraps up the regular season over the weekend as they host McKendree on Saturday followed by Illinois Springfield on Sunday.
