Cardinals Drop Two to No. 17 Southern Indiana

The William Jewell softball team was swept on Friday afternoon by No. 17 Southern Indiana by scores of 2-0 and 11-5. The Cardinals drop to 16-14 overall and 5-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while the defending national champion Eagles move to 23-13 and 11-3 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T3: The Screaming Eagles got on the board in the third inning on a sacrific fly from Cailtyn Bradley. (1-0, USI)
  • T7: USI added an insurance run in the final inning after Jennifer Leonhardt doubled to right center. (2-0, USI)

LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
IN THE CIRCLE
  • Win: Leonhardt (14-4) earned the win, scattering four hits while striking out 10. 
  • Loss: Sarah Lewis (3-3) took the loss despite allowing just six hits and two earned runs to the 17th ranked Eagles.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • T1: USI jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first as Bradley had an infield single scoring Claire Johnson. (1-0, USI)
  • T4: In the fourth, the Eagles plated four runs on four hits to expand their lead to five. (5-0, USI)
  • T5: Back-to-back doubles in the fifth made it a seven run game in favor of USI. (7-0, USI)
  • B5: The Cardinals rallied in the bottom of the frame, led by a pinch hit solo home run to straight away center by Aly Manhart, the first of her career. Courtney Beatty and Emily Hoover followed with RBI hits to pull Jewell within three. (7-4, USI)
  • T6: The Eagles got two runs back immediately on a two RBI single from Hailey Shouse. (9-4, USI)
  • T7: USI added two more runs on back-to-back hits in the seventh. (11-4, USI)

  • Win: Hailey Smith (4-1) earned the win, working four and two-thirds innings, giving up one earned run. 
  • Loss: Anna Biondo (6-8) gets the loss, giving up five earned runs in four innings. 
  • Save: Bradley (1) earned her first save of the year, going two and one-third innings, striking out three.
