Volleyball Earns Five Set win over Southern Nazarene

The William Jewell volleyball team split the final day of the OBU/SNU Invitational on Saturday as they grabbed a five set win over Southern Nazarene before falling to Northwestern Oklahoma, also in five sets. The Cardinals end the early non-conference schedule at 4-7 overall. 
 
GAME ONE
Jewell – 3

20-25, 25-21, 18-25, 25-20, 15-12

 
How it Happened
  • The Cardinals fell into a 10-14 hole midway through the first set after two errors. A service ace by Paityn Hardison pulled Jewell within 20-23 but they could get no closer. 
  • With the set tied at 10, the Cardinals used two attack errors by the Storm and a ace from Elizabeth Quinn to pull ahead by three. SNU rallied to pull within one late in the set but Jewell held on for the 25-21 win. 
  • Jewell trailed by nine early in the third set but scored eight of the next nine points to pull within two at 15-13. SNU responded by outscoring the Cardinals 10-4 over the final 14 points. 
  • With their backs against the wall the Cards opened up a 22-18 lead in the fourth and got two kills and an ace from Hardison to force the fifth set. 
  • Jewell got back-to-back kills from Tori Vogt to go in front 10-6 in the finale and finished strong on a block from Quinn and Maddie Wingert
 
For the Cardinals
  • Hardison paced the offense with a career-high 22 kills while Vogt followed close behind with 18, just one shy of her career-high. 
  • Lauren Castaneda dished out 24 assists while Megan Rhule finished with 17. 
  • Kennedy Ruckh also posted a career-best 25 digs.
  • Wingert finished with a career-high seven blocks while Quinn (7) and Meghan Tauke (4) matched their own career-best.  
 
For the Crimson Storm
  • The Storm put three in double figures in kills led by Kayla Thomas' 18. 
  • Bailey Turang posted 21 digs while Madeline Lynch had 20. 
 
GAME TWO

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals trailed by as many as four late in the opening set before falling by a score of 25-20. 
  • With the score tied at 18, Northwestern Oklahoma opened up a three point lead. The Rangers got kills from Kaitlyn Robinson and Kaydee Honneycutt to end the set. 
  • After trailing by two sets the Cardinals rallied in set three. Jewell jumped out to a 20-16 lead after kills from Hardison and Tauke. The Rangers tied the set at 23 and again for the next three points until kills from Hardison and Wingert sealed the set. 
  • Jewell fell behind in the fourth set by as many as five before scoring five consecutive points to knot the score at 14. From there the Cardinals outscored Northwestern Oklahoma 11-4 to force the deciding set. 
  • The Cardinals jumped out to an early lead behind a kill and two blocks from Wingert. The Rangers rallied to take a 13-11 lead but a kill from Quinn and Hardison ace knotted the score once again. NWOSU got back-to-back kills to steal the win, 15-13.
 
For the Cardinals
  • Hardison led the Cardinals with a double-double of 18 kills and 14 kills. 
  • Wingert added a season-high 16 kills and five blocks. 
  • Lauren Castaneda also added a double-double of 28 assists and 14 digs. 
  • Kennedy Ruckh collected 23 digs. 
 
For the Rangers
  • Honneycutt led the Rangers with 19 kills, 17 digs, and four blocks. 
  • Kiauna Clark added 17 kills while Robinson finished with a game-high 46 assists. 
 
Up Next
The Cardinals return to the Mabee Center for the 2019 home opener on Friday as they host Southern Indiana for the first GLVC action of the season.
