The William Jewell women's basketball team rallied from a 24-point second half deficit on Saturday to tie the game late but a last second bucket by Southern Indiana lifted the Screaming Eagles over the Cardinals 79-78. Jewell drops to 5-10 on the season and 1-6 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
How it Happened
- Southern Indiana jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the opening period but the Cardinals responded with a 13-7 run to take their first lead at 15-14.
- USI used a 17-5 run to open up a 15 point lead in the second quarter. Lea Finn hit a three with 33 seconds in the half to make it a 42-29 game at the break.
- The Screaming Eagles continued their run into the third quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 13-2 over the first four and half minutes before Jewell rallied. Led by Bailey Russell's 10 points over the final 5:28 of the period, the Cardinals pulled within 13 at 61-48.
- Jewell outscored Southern Indiana 25-13 over the first 9:21 of the final frame, led by three triples from Ainsley Tolson to pull within three. With just 30 seconds remaining the freshman Tolson converted a traditional three-point play to take the game at 76. After USI took a late lead it was again Tolson who connected on two free throws to put the Cardinals on top for the first time since the opening quarter but USI's Emma DeHart found her way through the lane and scored with just 1 second remaining to push the Eagles to the win.
For the Cardinals
- For the fourth straight game, and fifth out of the last six, Tolson scored a career-high with 17 points while fellow freshman, Russell finished with 15. The duo also combined for nine assists.
- Kiara Bradley and Sydney Offield added 12 a piece while Claire Burch chipped in 10.
- Bradley earned a double-double with a game-high 11 rebounds.
- The Cardinals converted a season-high 29 free throws.
For the Screaming Eagles
- DeHart led all scorers with 21 points while Hannah Haithcock had 15 and Ashley Johnson 14.
- The Screaming Eagles owned the paint, outscoring Jewell 36-12.
