Slow Start Dooms Cardinals at Illinois Springfield

The William Jewell women's basketball team fell into an early hole from which they could not recover, falling 71-46 to drop to 5-7 on the season and 1-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. 

How it Happened
  • The Cardinals struggled in the early going, committing five turnovers and falling into a 12-0 hole just under four minutes into the game. Rachel Schon helped keep Jewell close, scoring the first six points. 
  • UIS outscored the Cardinals 18-10 in the second quarter to make it 38-22 at the half. 
  • Jewell started the second half strong with a nearly immediate backdoor layup by Kiara Bradley to cut the deficit to 14 but the Prairie Stars responded with a 11-4 run to expand the lead to 21. 
  • Illinois Springfield grew the lead to as many as 30 in the fourth quarter but a steal and layup by Bailey Russell followed by a three from Lea Finn brought the score to the final. 

For the Cardinals
  • Ainsley Tolson led the Cardinals with a career-high 14 points, five rebounds and two assists. 
  • Kaitlyn Baird, who appeared in a career-best 19 minutes finished with a team-high six rebounds and two blocks, both of which were career-highs for the junior. 
  • The Jewell bench outscored UIS 31-18. 
  • The Cardinals shot 28% from the floor and 26% from three. 

For the Prairie Stars
  • Lauren Ladowski led all scorers with 18 while Tehya Fortune added 14. 
  • The Stars shot 44% from the field and connected on 22-of-26 free throws.
