Strong Finish Pushes Cardinals Past Bearcats

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team used a 15-5 run over the final four-plus minutes to secure a 63-55 win over Southwest Baptist on Friday night in the Mabee Center. The victory moves the Cardinals to 2-3 on the season and in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell got off to a rough start trailing by as many as 15 in the first quarter. The Cardinals shot 40% in the opening 10 minutes but attempted just 10 field goals compared to 17 by Southwest Baptist, who made 53% of those attempts. 
  • The roles were reversed the second frame as Jewell outscored the Bearcats 19-5, including 12 points from Kiara Bradley, to take the Cards from down 12 to up five with two minutes to go. A three by SBU's Brodi Byrd cut the lead to two at the break. 
  • The Cardinals were able to push the lead back to seven in the third quarter, behind eight points from freshman Elizabeth Ernsting over a span of just three minutes. The Bearcats closed the period on a quick 4-0 run to cut the advantage to three. 
  • Southwest Baptist rallied in the final period, eventually taking the lead after a lay up by Mary Rose Fosher with seven minutes remaining. With 4:29 to play a three from Libby Arnold sparked the 15-5 run that would seal the game. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Bradley led Jewell with a double-double, her third of the season, with 24 points, on 10-of-16 from the floor, and 12 rebounds. The senior also swiped a career-high seven steals. 
  • Ainsley Tolson added nine points, four rebounds and four assists. 
  • The Cardinals sho 41.5% from the floor and forced 22 turnovers to account for 17 points. 
  • Jewell won the battle on the glass, 39-30. 

FOR THE BEARCATS
  • Southwest Baptist finished with three players in double figures, led by Foster's 14. Byrd added 12 while Kyleigh Vaught chipped in 11. 
  • The Bearcats shot 39% from the field. 

UP NEXT
Jewell will wrap up the 2020 portion of the schedule on Sunday as they host Missouri S&T at 1 p.m.
