Softball Defeats Bemidji State to Split Opening Day

The William Jewell softball team earned a split on Saturday's opening day of the 2020 season falling to 3-2 in 10 innings to St. Cloud State before downing Bemidji State 6-2 in the night cap. 

Game One: 2-3 vs. St. Cloud State
How it Happened
  • Sarah Lewis got Jewell on the board first as the senior hit a solo home run in the top of the fourth. 
  • The Huskies took the lead with two runs on a passed ball and sacrifice fly in the bottom of the frame. 
  • Down to their final at-bat, the Cardinals tied the game on an RBI double from Allison Rawls, scoring Kelli McCallister
  • After three extra innings, St. Cloud State walked off on a fielder's choice. 

For the Cardinals
  • Jewell totaled six hits, led by Lewis' two. The senior took the loss in the circle (0-1), allowing one unearned run on just two hits over 3.1 innings. 

For the Huskies
  • St. Cloud was led by Maya Keating's three hits. 
  • Lauren Kirchberg (1-0) got the win in the circle, working six innings in relief. 

Game Two: 6-2 vs. Bemidji State
How it Happened
  • Jewell again jumped on top first with two runs in the bottom of the fourth as Kenzie Jones singled with the bases loaded followed by an RBI groundout by Lauren Ledbetter
  • Bemidji State immediately responded with a two-run double by Olivia Tucker. 
  • In the bottom of the sixth, the Cardinals exploded for fours on five hits. Back-to-back doubles from Emily Hoover and Aly Manhart put Jewell back on top. Ashlyn Sutton, Tori Farr, and Lindsay Glynn followed with three straight RBI hits to push the score to the final of 6-2. 

For the Cardinals
  • Hoover and Farr led Jewell with two hits while Manhart scored two runs. 
  • Jones (1-0) earned her first win of the season, working three innings in relief, striking out two.
     
For the Beavers
  • Bemidji State totaled 12 hits, led by three from Tucker to go along with two RBI. 
  • Kaidron McClafferty (2-1) took the loss after allowing four earned runs on five hits. 

Up Next
The Cardinals wrap up the Kelly Laas Memorial Tournament on Sunday as they take on Minnesota Crookston followed by a rematch with the host Huskies.
