Cardinals Drop Wild One in St. Louis, 85-83

The William Jewell women's basketball shot a blistering 65% from the field on Thursday but Missouri-St. Louis shot equally as good in the fourth quarter to rally and defeat the Cardinals late, 85-83. Jewell drops to 11-14 on the season and 7-10 in conference play. 

How it Happened
  • UMSL used a 11-2 to close the opening quarter to opening up a 21-14 lead after 10 minutes. 
  • The Cardinals opened the second quarter on a 20-4 run, capped by a three from Bailey Russell, to go from down seven to up nine. Jewell grew the lead to 10 at the half, 46-36. 
  • Back-to-back buckets by Claire Burch to open the second half pushed the Cardinal advantage to 14 quickly. Jewell shot an impressive 91% from the field in the third quarter to maintain a double digit lead. 
  • UMSL caught fire in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Cardinals 27-15. With Jewell leading by 10, the Tritons went on a 15-5 run to tie the game at 83 with eight seconds remaining. With just 0.3 on the clock Jewell was whistled for a foul and UMSL's Alex LaPorta hit two free throws to give the Tritons the win. 

For the Cardinals
  • Burch poured in a career-high 24 points on 11-of-14 from the floor. 
  • Kiara Bradley added 19, Rhyann Fisher 11, and Lea Finn 10. 
  • Jewell connected on 35-of-54 from the field and nine-of-17 from three. 

For the Tritons
  • LaPorta finished with a game-high 32 points while Kiara Stewart added 17 to go along with 10 rebounds. 
  • UMSL hit 57% of shots from the floor and won the battle in the paint 56-46.
