Cardinals Rally to Sweep Day One of Drury Invite

The William Jewell softball team earned two wins on Friday to open the Drury Invitational. The Cardinals, who improve to 5-5 on the season, defeated Northeastern State (Okla.) 7-6 before making short work of Lincoln, 12-4 in six innings. 

Game One: 7-6 vs. Northeastern 
How it Happened
  • Jewell jumped on top first with two runs in the top of the first inning as Tori Farr scored on an error followed by Lindsay Glynn crossing the plate on a RBI groundout. 
  • Northeastern State wasted little time responding as the RiverHawks scored two runs in the bottom of the frame to tie the game at two. 
  • Megan Green put NSU on top in the second inning with a two run home run but Lauren Ledbetter hit a grand slam for the Cardinals in the following frame to make it 6-4, Jewell. 
  • Northeastern State got one run back in the bottom of the third but Sarah Lewis knocked an RBI double to push the lead back to two. 
  • The RiverHawks got a solo home run in the sixth to pull within one but Lewis two strikeouts in the seventh to shut the door.  

For the Cardinals
  • Farr and Emily Hoover each posted two hits while Ledbetter finished with four RBI. 
  • Lewis (2-3) earned the win in the circle, going all seven innings, while striking out five. 

For the RiverHawks
  • Green and Cat Rodman finished with two hits to lead the RiverHawks. 
  • Gail Young was strapped with the loss, allowing five earned on eight hits. 

Game Two: 12-4 vs. Lincoln 
How it Happened
  • Just like in the opening game, the Cardinals struck first with two runs in the first inning as Glynn stole home before Hoover scored on a RBI single by Allison Rawls
  • The Blue Tigers scored three runs on a Cardinal error in the third inning but Jewell quickly responded as Lewis doubled to score two before scoring on a wild pitch. Lauren Ledbetter scored on a sac fly to make it 7-3.  
  • In the fifth frame Ledbetter hit her second home run of the day and was followed by Abby Dubinski's first long ball of her career to push the lead to seven.
  • Lincoln got one run back in the sixth but Hailey Wall later walked followed by a sac fly by Dubinski to push the lead to the final of 12-4.  

For the Cardinals
  • Rawls led Jewell with three hits while Hoover and Glynn each had two. 
  • Dubinski finished with four RBI. 
  • The Cardinals swiped nine bases as a team, led by Glynn's three. 
  • Kenzie Jones (2-0) earned the win, allowing just a single earned run on four hits over six innings.

For the Blue Tigers
  • The Blue Tigers managed just four hits, from four different players. 
  • Alex Miller (1-1) took the loss, allowing eight earned runs on eight hits. 

Up Next
The Cardinals continue action at the Drury Invite on Saturday as they take on Newman and Wayne State (Neb.).
