Tuesday vs. Rockhurst
SERIES INFORMATION
- This will be the 152nd meeting between the Cardinals and Hawks in a series that dates back to 1917. Rockhurst leads the series 86-65 and has won the last four matchups. Last season, Jewell shot 52% from the floor but the Hawks shot a blistering 62% on their way to a 95-72 win. Eysan Wiley finished with 16 points and eight rebounds while Carter Olsen added 12 points.
CARDINAL NOTES
- The Cardinals are coming off a heartbreaking loss on Saturday at Missouri S&T, 68-66. Jewell got three looks in the final seven seconds, including a layup at the buzzer, but it rolled off the right side of the rim as the Miners escaped with the win. Mason Alexander paced Jewell with 20 points while Eysan Wiley added his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
- It may have been his first double-double of this season, but Wiley is certainly experienced with putting up big numbers on both ends of the floor. The senior moved into a tie for seventh among all active Division II players with his 22nd double-double against the Miners. This total is tops in the GLVC with Rockhurst's Quinton Curry in second with 17. Cam Martin of Missouri Southern leads all active DII players with 39 double-doubles.
- On Saturday, with his 20 points, Alexander surpassed the 600 point mark for his career. The junior enters the week averaging 9.2 points over his 67 games played. Also on Saturday, Robbie Hanson surpassed a career mark of his own with his 100th rebound. Four other players are closing in on their own scoring milestones as Jackson Golightly is one point from 500, Carter Olsen one point from 200, Jevaughn Ferguson is five points from 100 while Wiley needs just 17 to reach 1,200.
- John Zimmerman earned his first start of the season, and the second of his career, on Saturday and posted the best game of his three years. The junior scored 11 points and pulled down five rebounds in 33 minutes of action, all of which were career-highs.
- Free throws have come in bunches over the last three games as the Cardinals have gotten to the line 61 times, which accounts for nearly half of their season total. Unfortunately, the free points have been a little harder to come by as Jewell has hit just 39 of those 61 (.639). Against Missouri S&T, the Cards went 8-for-18 from the line in a two point loss.
- Wiley has been a force in the paint for much of his career and being the primary focus on scouting reports has opened up an opportunity for the senior to distribute the ball more than ever before. He leads the team and is 10th in the GLVC with 3.50 assists per night, the most by any non-guard in the league.
- The Cardinals benefited from the return of Grant Stubbs over the weekend as he scored nine points and grabbed eight rebounds in 25 minutes. Stubbs had not played since January 6 when he suffered a minor injury in the early minutes against Truman.
- Five of Jewell's 18 players also played with at least one current teammate at the high school level. Hanson and Hughes both played for Liberty North from 2014-18, with Perry joining them in 2016. Additionally, Jackson Golightly and John Zimmerman were teammates for four years at Maryville High School (MO) from 2013-17. Zimmerman initially attended Northwest Missouri State but did not play basketball giving him two years of eligibility remaining compared to Golightly's one.
- Carter Olsen enters his third season as a Cardinal but will be listed as a senior this year as he is set to graduate in three years. Additionally, Olsen was married in the offseason to wife, Saige.
- Grant Stubbs was a big pick up for the Cardinals both on the floor and amongst alumni as he is the eldest son of former Cardinal All-American Weldon Stubbs, '94. The senior Stubbs was inducted into the William Jewell Hall of Fame in 2016.
ABOUT ROCKHURST
- Rockhurst has been a bit of a mystery this year as the Hawks were selected second in the GLVC West in the preseason and returned their top six players, including two who had already surpassed the 1,000 point mark as juniors. Despite all the experience that has returned, the Hawks enter the week at 4-6 overall and has lost five of their last six.
- Curtis Lewis and Quinton Curry are two of the top players in the league and have played, but not started, in the last two games for Rockhurst. Lewis averages 13 points per night while Curry puts in just 8.1, nearly half of what he averaged last season. Chris Hamil has also helps pace the Hawks with 12.2 points per night.
- Despite the odd lineups to start games, the Hawks are still talented and very dangerous from anywhere on the floor with some of the most skilled guards in the GLVC as well as one of the tallest rosters. As a team, Rockhurst shoots 40.7% from the floor and 34.4% from three.
