LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team battled through a slow start, seven ties and eight lead changes to overcome Maryville, 59-54, to move to 5-6 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams started slowly, as Claire Burch's free throw finally broke the ice, more than three minutes into the game. The Cardinals got things rolling late in the first quarter, going on a 15-0 run, led by eight points from Kiara Bradley, to go on top 15-4.
- In the second period, Maryville outscored Jewell 15-9, including a 9-0 run, to trail by two at the break.
- After the intermission, the Saints went on top by six after a three from Jayda Jansen. Ainsley Tolson sparked a 10-4 run, capped by back-to-back jumpers from Aleah Asare and Sydney Offield to tie the game at 40.
- After another triple by Maryville which put Jewell down one, the Cardinals enjoyed a 7-0 run, including five points from Macyn Wilbers to go back on top by six. The Saints were able to cut the lead to two with under a minute remaining the Jewel l went 5-of-6 from the foul line to secure the victory.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Bradley finished with a double-double, her sixth of the season, with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
- Wilbers was also in double-figures with 11 to go with six boards.
- Tolson finished with nine points, two steals, and a career-high seven assists.
- Jewell outrebounded the Saints by 10, 43-33.
FOR THE SAINTS
- Jansen led Maryville with a game-high 22 points and was the only Saint in double-figures.
UP NEXT
The Cardinals are scheduled to take on Truman on Saturday at 1 p.m. in a rematch. This game is rescheduled from February 20.
