Slow Start Dooms Cardinals in Loss to UMSL

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball team was outscored 27-12 in the opening quarter and could not recover on Sunday as they dropped a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest to Missouri-St. Louis by a final of 86-56. The Cardinals drop to 3-4 on the year while UMSL improves to 4-2.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell was first on the board with a layup by Ainsley Tolson just over 65 seconds into the game but from there the Tritons went on a 12-0 run over the next three minutes to open a 10 point lead and force and early timeout by Jill Slominski. The Cardinals pulled back within five but eventually saw the UMSL lead extend to 15 by the end of the period.
  • The Tritons pushed the lead to as many as 23 in the second quarter before a traditional three point play by Kiara Bradley finally ended the scoring drought. Bradley finished the half with two more free throws to make a 47-25 game at the break.
  • UMSL expanded their lead to as many as 28 in the second half on their way to the win.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Tolson led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on 7-of-13 from the field to go along with four assists.
  • Bradley added 15 points and eight rebounds while Annemarie Boeh came off the bench to score 12, on 4-of-5 from three.

FOR THE TRITONS
  • The Tritons put three payers in double figures led by 15 from Alex LaPorta and Taylor Thompson while Breanna Diestelkamp added 13.
  • UMSL won the glass, outrebounding the Cardinals 41-22, including 22 offensive boards, leading to 18 second chance points.
