Jewell Holds On to Down McKendree

LEBANON, Ill. - The William Jewell women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead and held on down the stretch to defeat McKendree 80-75 on a season-best 53.7% from the field. The Cardinals improve to  6-8 on the season while the Bearcats fall to 4-9. 

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Jewell shot a blistering 70% from the floor in the opening quarter and went on a 9-0 run midway through to bust out to the early 22-14 advantage. 
  • Jewell cooled off in the second period offensively but turned it up on the defensive end, holding McKendree to just two points and a 9.1% shooting percentage. The Cardinals closed the half on another 9-0 run to lead 35-16 at the break. 
  • Both teams picked the offense back up in the third quarter with McKendree outscoring the Cardinals 24-21 but Jewell continued to hold the double-digit lead, 56-40, heading into the final 10 minutes. 
  •  The Cardinals shot a solid 50% from the field but the Bearcats hit 63%, scoring 35 points in the frame. McKendree started the final period on a run and eventually pulled within five with 30 seconds remaining but Kiara Bradley, Aleah Asare and Macyn Wilbers all connected on free throws down the stretch to keep the Bearcats at bay. 

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • Bradley led all scorers with 28 while also pulling down 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. 
  • Claire Burch went 10-of-12 from the floor for a season-high 20 points to go along with eight rebounds. 
  • Sydney Offield again flirted with a triple double, with eight points, eight assists and nine rebounds. 
  • Jewell shot a season-best 53.7% from the floor for the game, including hitting 8-of-18 three point attempts (44.4%) and 14-of-19 from the free throw line. 
  • Jewell was dominant on the glass, outrebounding McKendree 41-25, including 13 on the offensive end, leading 19 second chance points. 

FOR THE BEARCATS
  • Sydney Diekhoff led McKendree with 22 points while Christy Fortune added 18. 
  • Callie Pohlman had nine points and a game-high nine assists. 

UP NEXT 
Jewell is scheduled to be back in action on Thursday as they host Southern Indiana at 5:30 p.m.
