LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell women's basketball got their first win over a nationally ranked opponent in more than six years on Thursday night, upsetting the 23rd-ranked Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles, 70-58. The win moves the Cardinals to 7-8 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After rocky start with two turnovers on the first three possessions, the Cardinals gathered themselves and went on a 15-5 run, capped by a three from Sydney Offield. USI, however, scored the final two buckets of the opening quarter to make it 15-13 after one.
- The Eagles continued their mini run into the second period, taking the lead, 17-15, before the Cardinals closed the half by outscoring USI 12-5, behind three consecutive triples from Annemarie Boeh, to lead 27-22 at the break.
- The Screaming Eagles pulled within one just under two minutes into the second half but the Cardinals again pulled momentum back in their favor with a 21-8 run to expand their advantage to the largest of the night at 16, 48-32 with 50 seconds remaining in the third quarter.
- USI found some offense in the final period, getting as close as eight with five minutes to play but Jewell got four more three pointers, along with a big bucket from Bailey Russell with just 95 seconds on the clock to push their lead back to 12.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Jewell posted three double-doubles, led by Kiara Bradley's 19 points and career-high 14 rebounds (tied), to go along with four steals and three assists.
- Claire Burch finished with 15 points, going 13-of-16 from the free throw line, while also tying her career-high with 10 boards.
- Offield once again flirted with triple-double, scoring 10 points and pulling down eight rebounds while dishing out a career-high 11 assists, which is the most for a Cardinal since Maddie Nelson's 11 against Ottawa in December 2015.
- Boeh also shined, hitting four three point field goals to finish with 14 points.
- As a team, the Cardinals shot 43% from the floor while holding USI to a season-low 28% and out-rebounding the Eagles 43-24, another season-low.
