LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell men's basketball team opens Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Monday with a tough test as they travel to the defending GLVC West Champions, Southwest Baptist. The Cardinals return home on Thursday to host the Miners of Missouri S&T.

CARDINAL NOTES
- Jewell enters GLVC play looking to snap a three-game skid after dropping road contests at Central Missouri and Missouri Western. The Cardinals are 2-4 on the season, but all four losses have come by eight points or less.
- Heri Tshiyoyo recorded his first career double-double over the weekend with a team high 18 points and 11 rebounds in the overtime loss at Missouri Western. The big man is up to third in the conference with more than nine boards per outing, including three on the offensive glass each night, fourth best in the league.
- Kobe McKinley continues to use his athleticism to wreak havoc, now up to 2.3 steals per game, fourth in the GLVC. His 11 total takeaways is third in the conference and 43rd nationally. The junior is averaging a career best 30 minutes, 12.5 points, 6.2 rebounds, 2.3 steals and 1.0 blocks per game.
- Trey Shannon played every minute of the overtime game at Missouri Western to up his average to 39.3 per game. The junior continues to lead the GLVC in minutes per game and ranks among the top-10 in Division II. Three players, Tshiyoyo, Shannon and Jordan Jermain all shoot above 90% from the line while Mason Alexander and Jevaughn Ferguson are also above 80%.
- Jewell is one of the top free throw shooting teams in Division II entering the first week of conference play, coming in at 78.8%, third in the league and 30th in Division II.
- The Cardinals are allowing opponents just 67.8 points per game, good for the sixth best performing defensive team in the league, coming into GLVC play. The offense has put in 65 points per outing, a difference of just 2.8. Jordan Jermain put in 14 points at Missouri Western, all in the second half and overtime period, and remains the scoring leader for Jewell at 13.8. McKinley and Alexander add 12.5 and 11.7 to give the Cardinals three in double figures while Heri Tshiyoyo is just under at 9.8.
- Alexander will go down as one of the best long-range shooters in program history. Last week, he moved past Larry Mandacina (2005-09) into seventh all-time with his 158th career triple. The senior is also eighth with 442 attempts and 16th with a .357 clip from three-point land.
- Chris McCabe is now in his third season at the helm of the Cardinal program. The 14th coach in program history will look to get Jewell back to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018.
- Jewell is in its 123rd season of men's basketball on The Hill and are chasing win No. 1,700. The Cardinals entered the season with 1,668 victories, winning nearly 60% of the time over the last century-plus.
ABOUT SOUTHWEST BAPTIST
- Southwest Baptist enters conference play at 4-1 and coming off two wins over Pittsburg State and Hannibal-LaGrange.
- The top scoring and rebounding team in the league, the Bearcats enter the week averaging more than 88 points and 40 rebounds per outing, outrebounding opponents by nearly 15, sixth best in Division II.
- Four players average double figures for SBU, led by Quinn Nelson at 13.8 points and Mitch Ganote with 13.6. Jalil Beaubrun adds 12.8 and Nico Aguirre 11.8.
- Ganote averages nearly a double-double, leading the team with 9.6 rebounds per night while also dishing out 6.8 assists and grabbing 2.4 steals.
- Clark Sheehy owns more than 100 wins over his eight seasons on the Bearcat bench, including winning the GLVC West Division last season, going undefeated.
ABOUT MISSOURI S&T
- Missouri S&T is coming off their first win of the year, a 91-60 victory over Principia, to enter the week at 1-3.
- The Miners score 67.5 points per game, led by 2020 GLVC All-Freshman selection Julien Smith's 18.5. Four others also average in double figures.
- Three players, Kevin Legardy, Kade Froebe and Ryan Parker pull down more than five rebounds per game as the Miners are ninth in the conference with 35 per night.
- Legardy adds 10 points and a team-high 3.3 assists and 2.3 steals while shooting nearly 44% from three.
- As a team Missouri S&T is second in the GLVC and 37th in Division II, allowing opponents just a 38.8% clip from the floor while shooting better than 42% themselves.
- Bill Walker, a 1987 Missouri S&T graduate, is now in his third season at the helm of the Miner program.
