Men's Basketball to Host Baptist Bible Friday Night

LIBERTY, Mo. – The William Jewell men's basketball team takes a break from GLVC play this week as they host Baptist Bible College on Friday night in the Mabee Center.

CARDINAL NOTES
  • Jewell enters the week coming off a win an 81-77 win over Missouri S&T in their GLVC home opener. The Cardinals had to hold off a furious rally by the Miners, who scored 17 points over the final four minutes, to secure the win.
  • Heri Tshiyoyo was expected to come in and take over a large load in the paint and has picked up his production on the glass as of late. The junior is leading the GLVC with 9.3 rebounds per game, reaching double figures in four of eight contests. Additionally, he is putting in 9.1 points, scoring a career high 22 in the season opener against Purdue Northwest.
  • Mason Alexander scored a season-best 20 points on 7-of-11 shooting on Thursday against Missouri S&T, to go with four assists and two steals. The senior guard is leading the Cardinals with two assists per night while averaging better than 12 points. 
  • Kobe McKinley came off the bench to pour in 16 points and grab five rebounds in just 14 minutes of action last week. The junior continues to be active defensively, coming into the week ranked second in the GLVC with 2.25 steals per game and 18 total. Also a menace on the glass, he has grabbed 2.3 offensive rebounds per outing, second only to Tshiyoyo's 2.6. 
  • Leading the conference in minutes is Trey Shannon, who is also14th in Division II with just under 37 minutes per contest. The junior has been a steady presence for Jewell through eight games, averaging 7.5 points, 3.4 rebounds, and 1.5 assists while shooting nearly 87% from the free throw line. 
  • Along with Shannon, five others, Tshiyoyo, Alexander, Jordan Jermain, John Zimmerman, and Isaac Patterson shoot above 80% from the charity stripe, making it one of the Cardinals strongest areas. Jewell is among the top-15 in Division II with a team clip of 79.3%, a 13% improvement from this point last season.  
  • Alexander will go down as one of the best long-range shooters in program history. Last week, he moved past Jason Generally (1991-95) into sixth all-time with his 164th career triple with an opportunity to move into the top-five this season. The senior is also seventh with 453 attempts and 14th with a .362 clip from three-point land. 
  • Chris McCabe is now in his third season at the helm of the Cardinal program. The 14th coach in program history will look to get Jewell back to the GLVC Tournament for the first time since 2018. 
  • Jewell is in its 123rd season of men's basketball on The Hill and are chasing win No. 1,700. The Cardinals entered the season with 1,668 victories, winning nearly 60% of the time over the last century-plus.
 
ABOUT BAPTIST BIBLE
  • Coming off a 2021 Association of Christian College Athletics (ACCA) National Championship, Baptist Bible enters the week at 6-2 on the season. They will take on Columbia College (Mo.) an an exhibition at Rockhurst before Friday's game. 
  • Junior Trent McBride leads the offense with more han 19 points per game while pulling down 8.2 rebounds. National Tournament Most Valuable Player Tre Minton is second on the team with 13.6 points per outing while grabbing 7.8 boards. 
  • Minton, along with D'Shawn Coleman are both coming off All-America seasons, as Coleman, who has played in 4-of-8 games this season, hauls in a team-best 11.5 rebounds per game. Tre Flowers, a 2021 second team All-American and Nick Coble also average in double figures with 10.8 and 12.0 points respectively.
  • The Patriots are led by Darin Meinders, a former successful high school coach, now in his third season as coach and Athletic Director.
