ROSEMONT, Ill. - The William Jewell softball team dropped the first two games of the 2021 season on Saturday with a 9-1 loss to Saginaw Valley followed by a 5-2 decision with Ashland.
GAME ONE
Jewell 1, Saginaw Valley 9
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Jewell came out of the gates fast with a run in the opening half inning. Allison Rawls singled and stole second before scoring on an Abby Dubinski base hit to put the Cardinals on top early.
- Saginaw Valley responded immediately with two runs in the bottom of the frame on four hits and three errors.
- SVSU added two runs in the second inning, three in the fourth and two more in the sixth to end the game early.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Rawls finished with two of Jewell's four hits while Dubinski and Kenzie Jones had the other two.
- Aly Manhart (0-1) took the loss, allowing two earned runs on seven hits.
FOR THE (OTHER) CARDINALS
- Saginaw pounded out 14 hits, led by Julia Salisbury with three.
- Julia Mundy (1-0) got the win, giving up just four hits and a single earned run over six frames.
GAME TWO
Jewell 2, Ashland 5
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless four frames, Jewell broke the ice in game two in the fifth inning as Dubinski singled and eventually scored on a passed ball. Payton Totzke also crossed the plate on a sac fly off the bat of Hailey Wall.
- Ashland rallied in the bottom of the inning, plating five runs on four hits.
FOR THE CARDINALS
- Sabrina Olmo enjoyed her first career multi-hit game with two base knocks while swiping a bag.
- Wall had Jewell's lone RBI.
- Jones (0-1) suffered the loss while striking out five over 5.1 innings of work.
FOR THE EAGLES
- Ashland was led by two hits a piece from Cat Lohse and Hailey Krinn while Hylton had two RBI.
- Kayla Ruperto (1-0) earned the win after not allowing an earned run over seven innings.
UP NEXT
Jewell will wrap up the Lewis Dome Invitational on Sunday morning as they take on No. 24 Grand Valley State followed by former GLVC foe Parkside.
