Jewell Sends Seniors Out on Top with Comeback Win Over Rockhurst

LIBERTY, Mo. - The William Jewell men's basketball team rallied from down 20 in the second to defeat crosstown rival Rockhurst 63-62. The win avenges an loss to the Hawks earlier this season and finishes the season for the Cardinals at 5-16.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Rockhurst came out of the gates fast, jumping out to a double-digit lead less than six minutes into the game. The Cardinals got back within six after a bucket by Grant Stubbs with 8:27 remaining in the opening half but the Hawks finished on a 17-10 run to hold a 13-point advantage.
  • The Hawks again came out of the locker room firing, quickly pushing their lead to 20 at 44-24 with 17:06 to play. Over the next seven minutes to Cardinals cut into the lead, going on a 20-4 run, led by 10 from Jackson Golightly, including back-to-back three pointers, to pull within four, 48-44, with just over 10 minutes to go. Rockhurst extended the lead back to nine but three more triples, from Carter Olsen, Eysan Wiley and Jordan Jermain quickly made it just a two point deficit. Trailing by one, the freshman Jermain drove the length of the floor and was fouled and connected on both ends of a 1-and-1 to put Jewell on top with 4.4 on the clock. Rockhurst was able to get down the floor and get a layup off but Wiley came from behind to block the shot and secure the win.

FOR THE CARDINALS
  • It was the seniors who the led way on their day as Wiley finished with 18 points and six rebounds while Golightly added 10 and seven, respectively.
  • Olsen scored a career-high 16 on 4-of-7 from three in his final game in a Jewell uniform.
  • In addition to hitting the game winning free throws, Jermain finished with a solid line of seven points, six boards and four assists.
  • Jewell committed a season-low four turnovers while grabbing 10 offensive boards leading to 16 points.
FOR THE HAWKS
  • Rockhurst finished with three in double-figures led by Nick Volz with 13.
  • The Hawks shot 44% from the floor compared to 34% for the Cardinals.
